Glen Raven and Dickson, eco-friendly fabrics

Helping the buildings save energy

The building industry is currently responsible for 41% of Europe’s overall energy consumption and 36% of the CO2 emissions.

The increasingly common air conditioning systems consume considerable amounts of energy. Cooling requires three times more energy than heating. Dickson has focused its R&D on reducing this environmental impact, in a primarily passive manner by blocking solar gain.

This is always a central part of the development phase of our solar protection materials.

If just 75% of the windows in Europe were equipped with solar protection, the European building industry’s energy efficiency would improve by 13% (saving approximately €50 billion – according to 2015 estimates)*

Reducing the environmental impact of our manufacturing processes

Dickson fabrics are woven with solution-dyed yarn, eliminating a highly pollutant production phase. The fabrics treatments are optimized to avoid excessive use of chemical substances on the products.

For example, the stiffening agent also ensures the fabric’s rot-proofing. The screen fabrics’ Sunworker treatment is the thinnest possible, making it the most environmentally friendly fabrics in its class.

The treatment process is performed in a closed circuit. The energy generated from the waste water is used to heat the incoming water. No chemical products are released into the environment.

Improvements to the manufacturing process that have been made over the past four years have reduced the amount of recycling needed by more than 60%.

Coming up with operational solutions for the end of our products’ life cycles

The Green Ovation approach takes into account all aspects of all our products’ end of the life cycle. The edge threads are partly recycled to make industrial filters, automobile felt, insulating products and outdoor rugs.

98.5% of the fabric we produce is top choice thanks to the quality of our manufacturing process; there is no poor quality waste. In 2013, thanks to the remarkably high quality of its remnants, Dickson was able to incorporate these “waste” materials into creative new outdoor upholstery collection.

Comprised of up to 50% recycled solution-dyed acrylic fibres, the new Sunbrella® Renaissance collection offers a wide range of mix and match products. The product’s recycled content comes directly from our mills where the left-over yarn from our fabric standard production is sorted into colour groups, and reduced to its original fibre state, at which point it is combined with newly produced, “virgin” Sunbrella® fibres.

REPLAY: ECO DESIGNED FABRIC COLLECTION

Dickson presents Replay, a totally unique concept of eco designed fabric.

The principle: instead of sending the left-over solution-dyed acrylic yarn from the end of our spools to outside recycling centres, we now use them in-house to make new fabric, in keeping with Dickson’s commitment to environmental protection and aim to produce zero waste.

This program’s first brain child is the

collection, the world’s first range of eco-designed solar protection.

A mini collection featuring 20 beautiful references including 7 jacquards, 8 solids and 5 stripes.

The creative signature style of this revolutionary range breaks away from traditional solar protection codes to offer an array of original patterns and contemporary colours.
