Many employees spend a lot of time in office environments. As we fill our homes with digital and material comforts, we need to make sure the gap between our private and professional lives does not negatively impact on our performance at work. To ensure greater employee satisfaction and productivity, companies therefore need to provide comfortable work environments where people feel a sense of well-being.

How have offices changed over the years?

The workspace has always been at the heart of every company – in fact, it’s essential to all production operations. But to keep pace with our changing business environment, technology and society, we need to transform this space. Compartmentalized for many years, offices are now more open and collaborative, and well-being at work plays a significant role in the lives of employees.

How to think about your workspace?

Workspaces are now open and designed to foster communication, with neighboring companies and housing often sharing their catering or parking spaces, for example. Many companies now also offer their teams coworking spaces.

Open space: the open-space office makes it easier to bring teams together, creating more cross-functional, fluid and user-friendly ways of working. These more welcoming spaces also help people share ideas. It is still important to provide “retreats” where employees can spend time alone, if they wish. These spaces should help you concentrate and feel comfortable.

The flex office: more and more companies are opting for the "flex office”. In the “flex office”, no one has a fixed workstation. Every morning, employees arrive with their laptop and sit wherever they wish. Teleworking also forms part of this approach. From presentations to meetings, how we concentrate or use space differs and workspaces need to reflect this. Everyone is given more freedom to choose the space in which they want to work but also the people they want to surround themselves with.

No more boundaries between home and office: whereas a decade ago, companies offered employees more practical incentives, such as nurseries and concierge or hairdressing services, today the challenge is to create living spaces in the workplace, with equipped kitchens, lounges, bathrooms for sporty employees and restrooms that promote the well-being of employees by offering them a familiar working environment.

Officle plants : plants are now found in entrance halls or on desks and can even be used to create plant walls. Plants aren’t simply beautiful to look at - they also offer a number of benefits. As they purify the air, improve productivity, and reduce illness and stress, they can play an important role in offices.

Sustainable offices: in the future, companies will need to integrate the environment into the way they work by ensuring offices comply with best practices in energy and environmental performance and, if they wish, by creating vegetable gardens or even beehives to promote the ecosystem and the well-being of employees.

What colors are best in the office?

  • Blue: soothing and gentle, this “cold” color is restful and calming.

  • Yellow: used in an office, yellow promotes concentration and creates a warm atmosphere. Use in soft shades or tangy tones to stimulate thinking.

  • Natural shades: classic and timeless, they blend with other colors and don’t clash with the existing décor.
  • Red: used sparingly here and there, red has a role to play in the office. It is stimulating and energizing.
